THE BONE AND BODY CLINIC AND TRAINING CENTRE, MANIPUR

Dr Ringo Paonam is returning to Manipur to open a full-service clinic and training centre. It will provide close access to the Manipuri masters, allowing us to expand our treatment techniques. We will also be able to treat more serious and varied conditions, expand our use of indigenous, plant-based medicines, and begin training the next generation.

WHAT WE TREAT

The Bone and Body Clinic specialises in treating musculoskeletal disorders such as slipped and herniated discs, spondylosis, and other joint misalignments. However over the last 10 years of clinical practice, Dr Paonam’s unique diagnostic and treatment skills have drawn an increasing number of clients who have been offered no hope by conventional western medicine for conditions such as partial paralysis, scoliosis, multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.

By adapting and using the Manipuri treatment systems, Dr Paonam has been successful at helping clients to avoid or recover from surgery, leave their wheelchairs or supportive devices and medications, and live in ways they were told would never be possible.

The new generation of chronic diseases common in the west, are relatively unknown to Manipur. However, the Manipur treatment systems have proven highly effective in treating them. We believe treatment will be even more effective in Manipur, where clients will have access to more Manipuri techniques and masters, natural, plant-based medicines, and real, organic food.

TREATMENT SYSTEMS

The Manipuri medical system is essentially different from conventional western medicine in that it looks at the person as one interconnected whole and then to the source of all the symptoms the person may be experiencing in order to come to a proper diagnosis.

Dr Ringo Paonam believes that when you have a proper diagnosis, healing is then possible. Often a client’s chief complaint has its source in another part of the body. That source may be a habitual movement over many years in a certain profession. It may be a forgotten childhood injury. It may be a hereditary weakness or dietary imbalance. Unless that root imbalance is addressed, a treatment that only relieves the chief complaint will often be temporary.

For Dr Paonam, the spine is the basis for finding that cause and reaching a proper diagnosis. It reveals the state of the whole body and its web of interconnected systems. Many forget that the spine is the living, ever-changing support that protects our organs, facilitates our nervous and circulatory systems, allows us to move and stay upright. It is the basis for our health and an imbalance in the spinal structure can refer to an imbalance in another part of the system.

Once the diagnosis is determined, different treatment modalities are employed, depending on the age, condition, general health and physical condition of the patient.

TREATMENT METHODS

Manipuri musculoskeletal techniques (Hakchang Sharu Polang Semba) require a confluence of precision and proper pressure to manually realign the individual joints of the spine and the rest of the joints in the body. While conventional medicine may, for example, treat just the knee, Dr Paonam’s approach looks at what has happened to the hip, the spine and the rest of the body in conjunction with the problem in the knee and brings the whole structure back into alignment.

Joint misalignment can be acute or chronic. When chronic, the realignment generally requires a progressive series of alignments that step by step brings each area of the body back into alignment as it becomes ready. The stretching rehabilitation exercises and supporting treatments are essential to facilitate that readiness by training the muscles and softening the related connective tissue.

REHABILITATION

Stretching rehabilitation (Haksel Kanglon) is an exercise system based on martial arts stretching forms which have been adapted to suit different fitness levels.

They are an essential component of the treatment process, enabling the muscles and connective tissue to become strong enough to support correct joint alignment. When practised with attention and discipline, they also contribute greatly to the development of mental and physical wellbeing.

MANIPURI SUPPORTING TREATMENTS

Tendon realignment (Shingli Naori Mapham Tahanba) involves softening tendons and encouraging them to support the spine in its proper position to facilitate the continuing realignment process.

Digestive treatment (Puk Suba) is a manual technique that frees the digestive system of blockages and stagnation, which in turn supports the immune and nervous systems. The Manipuri medical system has long known that the health of the whole body depends on the health of the gut.

Blood circulation (Mare Shuba) moves the blood from the tendons, forcing a flush of new blood into the area. This technique is often used in areas around joints that have restricted movement due to injury or lack of movement.

Massage (Tongsha Neikhaiba) is used to stimulate or relax muscles, according to the requirements of the patient, to facilitate the realignment process.

MEDICINE AND FOOD

Maibarol, the Manipuri form of natural and plant-based medicine, draws upon indigenous plants and techniques to address the source of many conditions. It considers the client’s interaction with his or her environment when diagnosing and treating disease.

In Manipur, we will have access to more of the plants needed for making medicine, which we will be able to prepare and apply in their fresh and potent state for clients.
